A lion from a zoo in South Carolina who escaped from his enclosure fatally attacked a 22-year-old female employee.
A team was performing routine cleaning of one of the enclosures when the lion named Matthai managed to escape and returned to his pen where he attacked and killed Alexandra Black, reports ABC News.
The staff was unable to calm the lion and the police had to shoot him down in order to reach the body of the victim.
The Conservation Center said it was “sorry for this loss of human life”, can we learn in a statement.
Alexandra had been working for the Burlington Conservation Center for only two weeks.
It’s too early to know how the lion managed to escape, according to the sheriff’s office.
The Conservation Center is home to over 80 animals from 21 different species. The Center will remain closed until further notice.
